My collages helped me greatly as I could be selective and choose only the best photos, which I then repeated to create shapes which could be into knit samples. I have discovered that I like structure in my work, this is something I can take on to embroidery as I can take photos and draw more structured shapes to be developed. I have realised that drawing is not just an exact copy of the object in which is being drawn. Drawing can be abstract, it does not have to be representational, this has allowed to me to be more confident while drawing, so I have started to develop the ‘Friday drawing days’ in my own work using some of the techniques.
My contextual references are mainly
artists Ptolemy Mann, whose woven pieces are printed on top of to create a dip
dyed effect which I have developed in my knit samples, and Phuong Thuy Nguyen. This
artist’s work looks at composition and shape, which has inspired me to create
structured pieces in both knit and weave. I feel I have been in the workshop
nearly every day as I wanted to make the most of the facilities, I believed that
if I went into the workshops and try different samples it has broadened my knowledge.
Now I feel more confident on the machinery to try new samples, linking to my
research. In my independent time I mainly tried to focus on my sketch book and
drawings so I had a large body of work to find inspiration to develop. I think I
developed my research in a lateral way, as I moved away from the artist’s work by
using some of their compositional ideas however, taking it further by using my
own colour scheme and photos to influence my designs to develop my samples
further.
